What fun!!! For 37 years, Talkeetna, Alaska, celebrated moose dung at its annual Moose Dropping Festival! A square inch of human skin consists of 19 million cells! It is reported that King Louis XIV of France took only three baths during his entire life!

I don’t know which is more disgusting: His Majesty only bathed thrice or an Alaskan moose manure festival.

Interesting perspective:
1) The idea that one should clean away all body odour producing substances is a relatively recent one (requiring access to a LOT of clean water, so much that one can afford to use drinkable water to scrub!). Therefore it’s only surprising to us because of our current values. It’s simply a matter of how much things have changed over hundreds of years.
2) This ALSO doesn’t mean that the king was necessarily dirty – he probably washed with a cloth and a basin of water.

Well according to this page, It is often claimed that Louis XIV only bathed three times in his life. In fact, Louis XIV was an incredibly clean King who bathed regularly in a large Turkish bath in his palace. He disinfected his skin with spirits or alcohol and changed his clothing (especially his underwear!) numerous times a day.

Another reference to add to the one I put above, that King Louis XIV did bathe!

Notice they didn’t claim that Louis XIV bathed only 3 times in his life. They claimed “IT HAS BEEN REPORTED that Louis XIV bathed only 3 times in his life.” If I falsely claim “Statement R is true”, you can truthfully claim “It has been reported Statement R is true.”

I read somewhere that the cavalry soldiers could smell the Indians before they saw them coming. And the Indians said the same thing about the soldiers.

The primary reason Christians didn’t bathe was because Jews and Muslims kept themselves clean. Even having ritual baths (baptisms). A Christian caught “clean” was tried by the Church and usually found guilty, of being a secret Jew or Muslim. After Rome became Christian the baths were closed as being immoral “dens of iniquity.” Hence the Christian ritual of sprinkling with holy water, instead of immersion.Another Christian myth is that the Romans persecuted Christians. That never was a policy of the Roman government. Persecutions that did happen were confined to local cities and areas. The emperor of Rome, Constantine, was Christian before the Christian bible was compiled. He ordered the bishops to collect the true Christian texts into one document (325 CE).Chistianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire in 380 Common Era. All other religions were banned. Christianity had been prevalent in the empire long before that.Even at that it was Nestorian Christianity, which was later declared heretical by the Roman Catholic Church.
