Darts take a few minutes to work, and can cause a few moments of panic: enough for all sorts to happen. It was an awful event, but they had to put the human first.
HUMANS are the greatest threat to all animal species, period. The zoo incident was tragic, because of human stupidity, and poor parenting, but the toon misses a serious point folks aren’t aware of.
I’ve darted many bears as part of “removal” or study, and the first thing animals do is freak and panic in 99% of cases, darts smart! The keepers knew that in addition to the time to take effect factor, darting the gorilla that was already displaying potentially hazardous stress as a result of all those humans screaming and yelling, the idiot mother’s kid was potentially in real danger of being accidentally killed by the upset animal.
The zoo has upgraded “security”, but as with the White House fence, some moron will soon try to evade the measures just to prove it can be done.
A difficult decision indeed. What irks me is that some animal activists openly said that the kid should have died and the gorilla should have been allowed to live.

I’ve been wondering why the zoo officials didn’t use a dart gun last week. I’m sure this wouldn’t have happened.

I still suspect the zoo sniper was just a bad shot.

No matter what the decision, somebody would’ve been angry. Too soon for this strip? It’s never too soon!

Poor ol’ Charlie Brown….

This is tacky and tasteless. An innocent gorilla was slaughtered because a mother couldn’t/wouldn’t control her child.

Sorry, those aren’t qualities I generally consider when I draw comics.

Very Mad Magazine-esque! Loved it! And using a Charlie Brown-like child figure was an especially good and inspired touch.

Not to hammer on the zoo folks, because I think they did the right thing, but the little tickturd should have been this years Darwin Award winner.
