Am I first? Just wanted to post from California that our cupboard looks like this because we have a rash of wierd little moths in our house and our cupboard was so infested we pulled everything out and now have to dump most and refill others. Found some mustard that expired in 2005 and never opened!
This would usually happen to me when my mother would come to visit. The I’d get the lecture about being organized. Then she would proceed to re-organize my entire kitchen!
rugratz, we had those moths once, too. they were in everything. We had an exterminator come out and he was spraying between the support slats and the ceiling at the top of the cupboards. We had to unscrew every bottle top because there were larva in the threads. As you said, we threw away more than half of what we had in the kitchen. Then we put down the bay leaves. Don’t know if that worked or if the exterminator did his job, but they never came back.
I keep my various flours, corn meal etc. in some airtight cannisters with clips (from Target)- use the ceraic ones for sugar etc. Right now I also have some whole wheat flour in the frig, because the new one I just opened could not fit. I keep ground flax seed in a smaller one.
All flour based products I buy spend 24 hours in the freezer before they go into the cabinet. That kills any weevil eggs that are there coming from the factory. It works.
This happened to me all the time growing up - mostly it was the cup cupboard though. I would just open the cupboard and the cups would fall out. I would always tease my mom that she purposly sabotaged the cupboard to which she would deny.
Ahh- good times.
At 68 I only have vague memories of the opening of the Fibber show on radio, but things falling in the closet seem to have been part of that memory.
Jack Benny’s long walks down into the vault where a Civil War vet would ask ‘is the war over yet’ were funny and it didn’t translate to tv very well
They’re called miller moths (because they commonly come in grain products) and we get them in birdseed, too. For that reason, we keep most of the birdseed in the freezer and just have part of a bag out in a container at one time.

Personally, I’m enjoying the fact that she’s still making her grocery list now that everything’s on the floor! :D

Back when more things were packaged in glass (like they were when this was drawn) you could lose a lot more from a collapse like this.
