Steve Luhm has been doing a great job on those tiles.
What makes this a great comic is that the stories are rooted in real-life. Can you imagine a foster-kid situation at Riverdale High? Betty and Veronica wouldn’t be able to handle it.
So Cody is this seasons talented problem child. Jamarr will continue to be “Ghostlike” and disappear when he is needed most. Afterall, he was a me first point guard. Steve Luhm may bring out the luster in floors, not prep athletes.
Sounds like to me this story line is going to be about me(Cody) against the whole world. Unless Father Gil or Kaz takes him under their wing and shows him that being a foster child can give life lessons.
Cody, Cody, Cody. Father Gil adopts the Exner…no we can’t go there. Cody “drills” Torry and lives at the Peaks…no we can’t go there. Cody joins band and proves adept at playing String of Pearls…no we can’t go there. Hey, it’s tough writing this strip.
I’m seeing Cody’s dad return to the football field, just like Shooter in Hoosiers. And then during the playdowns, Gil hands over the playsheet to Cooter and goes off with Cassie to look for the ghost who was supposed to take the 2nd half kickoff return.
P3: Too bad a two-dimensional comic strip can’t really show the broken QB twitching and spasming on the ground.
The Gilfather should be able to pull a few strings and get Exner a full ride at State so as soon as he graduates he can move right to the jock dorm at State and start on his summer job turning the automatic sprinklers on and off.
With the number 55 Cody is likely a linebacker. I’m sniffing college scouts and a scholarship. Doesn’t this story line parallel with the movie Blind Side? Nice turtleneck Gil.
I don’t know about the fictional state in which Milford is located. But, as a board member for a foster care agency in Illinois I can tell you that here kids age out at 21, not 18. iI believe this is true with most states
Even with the extra few years though it’s still a big problem because most of these kids are completely unprepared to support themselves and most foster parents aren’t wealthy and are often caring for more than one child and cannot afford to continue to support a child once the state/federal money goes away.
There is a wonderful and devastating documentary about this issue called Aging Out. I highly recommend it.

“Red shirt”?!
Everything’s black and white in Milford. Can’t blame Foster Child.

I like Bankerdanny’s idea. Cody’s problem is his future. What happens when he ages out. Who will help him face the future? The Ghost.

You can drill him but don’t crush him - got it Cody?
