Whoah! Powerful! You are definitely going where others fear to tread. One of my favorite passages of Frank Herbert’s.
Bravo both for theme (“the 300 lb gorilla in the room that no one talks about”) and for your potent but understated treatment of it.
A synchronicity: just yesterday I worked with a woman who is processing early life trauma, and two days previous, an Iraqui war vet who is dealing with some serious PTSD…This stuff is real! Scars are hidden!
Anyway, bravo and kudos to you, Gavin! Keep up the terrific work.

PS I hope the conversational thread that will ensue, hopefully addresses subjects like our addiction to fear,.. domestic violence.. communication skills — not just Frank Herbert.

My favorite statement about fear comes from Eleanor Roosevelt: “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

Pity Zen has gone with the liberal view of domestic violence. In studies, women are as likely as men to initiate domestic violence.

And women are more likely to be the sole aggressor, and not using violence to defend themselves. Men are shamed into not reporting domestic violence initiated by women, and indeed, are seldom believed by authorities and the courts.
That doesn’t even count domestic violence of women abusing children – just abusing their male domestic partners. We had one fellow in the Army whose wife used to thrash him regularly. He knew if he fought back he was doomed to jail, so she could do as she pleased with little fear of repercussion. He stayed as he loved his child dearly.
