Fortunately, the lockers at my school were made of the cheapest metal they could find. Anyone with some upper body strength could peel them like an orange if they forgot their combination – or if the built-in lock did. (and that happened all the time.)
The only locker I had to remember a combination to was my gym locker in junior high, and I forgot that stupid thing on a regular basis. My regular locker and my gym locker in senior high I just used a key lock for. It was actually safer to have a key lock at my school as we had enough jerks who enjoyed trying to crack combination locks.
Key locks may be picked. I absent mindedly discovered one day that my mailbox key could open the inner lobby door to my building. But when I tried it on the street door it jammed and the whole thing fell apart, had to play dumb when I called the condo manager.

At Sally’s age, all I had was a hook in the cloakroom and a cubby under my desk to keep my stuff in.

What if I forget to put my pants on?……and why did they let me go through half the day before I realized it?

My seventh-grade locker combination is still handy when I need another digit string I can remember and nobody else has reason to know.

Never had to remember my combination. I always wrote it down near the top of the second locker to the right.

I never worried about that. i was just pretty sure they wouldn’t make me repeat that nonsense a second day. Twenty years later….

In UK schools we don’t have lockers. We just took our coats and bags into the classroom with us.
Advantage of not having lockers: We could get what we want out of our coats and bags without trailing all the way to our lockers.
Disadvantage of not having lockers: Our things could get stolen easily.
