Brutus: There goes Gladys again, talking to her plants!
Brutus: Isn't that the dumbest thing you ever heard, Kewpie?
Pet owners talk to their pets every day. Whether you have a dog, cat, snake, fish, iguana, you talk to it. Teaching commands, such as “get paper”, “get slippers”, “get beer”, has the added advantage of making one’s life easier.
Many years ago growing up my mother would wrap her curlers in a scarf. She taught the family dog to go upstairs and get the curlers for her. One day I come home from school and she tells me, look what I taught Rusty to do. She tells the dog to get her curlers, and I was surprised and pleased when he ran upstairs, got the scarf with curlers, and brought them back down the stairs. That was a wet dog food day for sure. (for the dog).
Your plants communicate by how well or how poorly they grow. If you scream a lot around plants, they will be stunted. If you talk (whether to them or others) in gentle tones, they seem to grow adequately. Of course, it also helps to water them occasionally, as those of us who lack green thumbs have learned …
