If this was the start of Pay TV, the movie studios were agitated for fifteen or twenty years ahead of time. .In another sense, England had pay TV in the form of licensing fees since way back.

I don’t get what the neighbour means by charge Joanie. Money for babysitting? The kid knocked on a neighbour’s door & she let him watch TV & ring his mum. There is no way she can charge for that.
Also, I think commenters are being a bit rough on Joanie & Rick. It’s tough in the U.S. for parents as daycare is astronomically expensive. Parents do the best they can but when both have a busy work day, the kid just has to entertain himself.
