I think that’s the food from his mouth, not a backfire.
Judging from the dogs I’ve known, the moment Odie heard “dingle”, he would have instantaneously turned to the ball, and in his excitement, would have barked - loud, and with his whole body - except his mouth was loaded, so what came out was “blark”. We missed seeing Odie turn to see where Garfield would threw the ball.
I think the artist deliberately left that moment (and therefore seeing the source of that brown stuff) to the imagination. What further confounds is that Odie’s butt is pointed directly, no, aimed directly at Garfield in the previous frame. Tsk, tsk,… shame on you Mr. Davis :-)
So the question is, …..
Is it food,… or is it Memorex?
When our family dog used to be chowing down, you could set off a small nuclear explosiion next to him and he wouldn’t even look up. Maybe scoot his bowl out of the way a little….

Bet he won’t do that again.

This is why you should not play with a loaded Odie. It might go off.

Sometimes you’d think Garfield would put a LEETLE more thought into his actions…Not sure what his intention was this time, though.
Rakkav about 14 years ago
Probably he wanted to see if Odie preferred play over food. Well, now we know.

Looks like Johanan’s kitty is actually reclining and looked up at the photographer. Then the photo was rotated?
