From Wkipedia: Horehound is used to make hard lozenge candies that are considered by folk medicine to aid digestion, soothe sore throats, and relieve inflammation. It is also used in beverages, such as horehound beer, steeped as tea (similar to the Maghrebi mint tea), and in the rock and rye cocktail.
It’s like the day I discovered the root of all the problems in Mexico. I was at a flea market and bought a big bag of Mexican hard candy. I’ve never tasted anything less like something any sane person would call candy. Not sweet. Not even interestingly sour. Just nasty. Any place that thinks that was candy is gonna have a hard time. Of course, that didn’t stop me from filling a big bowl on my desk and watching people who took some.
Go on Amazon and look at the reviews for Haribo Sugar-Free Gummi Bears (I found the same comments in the sugared version, but the better comments refer to the sugarless).
I like the ol “gonna kill you” kind of no nutritional value type of candy. Much like we have here in the US. Sweet and nutritionally devoid of anything healthy. For instance, taffy, marshmallows, Rock candy, Nerds, Life Savers, candy bars and that sort of thing. My dad used to love European “candy”. We thought it was awful……they forgot the sugar. I received a box of Austrian chocolates one Valentines day, I fed it to the dog….man it was gross. Just saying.
horehound is tasty. I;ve never had the lozenges. Where I work we have these thick, long pieces of it, you break a hunk off and suck on it. great for sour throats. But it may be an acquired taste as I’ve eaten it for about 40 years and most of my co-workers think i’m nuts when I take a big bag of it home when I start getting a sore throat.

I agree with Gil. It sounds gross.

My dad and his parents loved Horehound drops. The rest of us thought they were awful.
