I’ll get really esoteric here. I once read a story by Henry James, “The Beast in the Jungle,” in which the main character discovered his life was one of constantly waiting. (That’s an inelegant summary.) It’s a long, dense story, and reading it was as if walking across a plowed field. I doubt anyone’s interested but here’s a link:
