I suspect it’s intelligence rather than accident - cargo pants are brilliant because you can carry stuff without having to carry the bag. The question is, why do women insist on carrying bags that are constantly getting lost, and when they’re not, they’re bottomless pits for losing all the items you want to carry around?

My son has a drill that he goes through before he leaves my house: He pats each pocket to make sure he has his wallet, cell phone, any other thing he may have brought over such as a DVD, etc. “Pat, pat, pat, pat.” If anything isn’t where it should be, he knows he’s left something behind. Now, my husband (aka Earl at our house) wears them, too! He only has two “pats,” though - cell phone and wallet!

While having my morning coffee I realized how little I really knew about pockets. So…who cares anyway. However, with time to kill I went to my browser and typed in >[ BBC - h2g2 - A Very Brief History of the Pocket ]. To say I learned some interesting stuff is understatement. Who says you can’t learn from the comics?

In the movie Harari they called Red Buttons “Pockets” because of his pants. He kept everything in them, even a mouth harp. Great movie.

At least Earl doesn’t need to have Opal carry all his ‘stuff’ in her purse.

Opal misses the point. It’s a guy thing: the more pockets you might use for carrying stuff, the cooler it is – whether you actually put stuff in most of the pockets is beside the point, they’re just there.

I carried a shoulder purse for so many years, I now have one shoulder lower than the other. I am not kidding! Needless to say, I now carry a very small hand purse with very little in it…lol. Too bad I couldn’t wear cargo pants…a great invention!!

3 pats for me: wallet , keys, cell phone.

I’m trying to explain to my beloved the difference between a purse and luggage.

One of the things I had to face as a widow was that I HAD to carry a purse. Before, husband had keys and money, (we didn’t bother with cell phone around town) so all I had to have was a tissue tucked somewhere discreet.

I have my departing ritual too. Keys, glasses, wallet (purse, id, whatever I need that day), and phone. I think most of us have to go through that to make sure we have everythign when we leave. Maybe it’s just part of getting older though.

cdward - ~Women’s clothing never have enough pockets, or large enough ones. When my mom was able to sew for me, I would always have her add more pockets than the patterns called for. Now that she’s gone, I’m always dissastisfied with what I can find ready-made. ~They can leave a purse packed (especially if it is neutral in color) and not have to repack it every time they get dressed. ~Women have more they need to carry than men - makeup, hand lotion, tissues, “feminine” products, medications, plus checkbook, billfold, coupons, plastic cards (credit, debit, loyalty, library, insurance, etc.) Remember, women are usually the ones to do the majority of the household’s shopping, taking kids to the doctors, and other errands so they usually need more of those cards than a guy.

Ladyhawk - I do carry a few things in my pockets, like my cell phone & shopping list, so when I get home, I always have to pat my pockets before I take off my clothes, as I don’t want things going through the washer.

I like the idea of cargo pants, but when I wear them I look even more like the Hindenburg than usual. Bet Earl does too!!

I like them more for having individual pockets to hold things. Can put my wallet in one spot, keys in another, and so on. Better than rifling through my pockets trying to find 1 thing.
