The Born Loser by Art and Chip Sansom for October 30, 2016
Transcript:
The Born Loser by Art & Chip Sansom Brutus: When I was at old Lakewood High, we had to take typing class... Brutus: My typing teacher, Mr. Felty, said we would use the skills we were learning for the rest of our lives... Brutus: I was skeptical then, but I now know he was right... Brutus: Mr. Felty taught us the proper position of our hands above the keys... Brutus: And the technique of assigning each letter key to a specific finger... Brutus: This method and lots of practice led to a typing speed of sixty words per minute, which I thought was impressive... Brutus: Until I discovered my untrained kid can type his texts faster than that, and he only uses his thumbs!

Maybe but the goofy kid cannot use a keyboard! I learned to type in 1975, and have never forgotten how despite a few decades of not doing it. Learning to type will improve a kids usefulness on a computer, yes it will !!! Learn to type kids!!!

I am with you Dr.DocSmith, I learned to type very early on myself. It was a skill I have used all my life.

When I was homeschooling my sons, typing was required for them. However, they were resistant to learning, until I found a software program that was basically a video game, using touch typing. When they learned that Mom could beat their scores, because I knew touch typing and they didn’t, it gave them incentive to learn. Not all computer work can be done with an itty-bitty keyboard.

So true. So very sadly true!

Typing was the most useful course I took in high school, though I didn’t know it at the time. The fastest I ever did was 40 words per minute. But I’ve never seen anyone who can thumb-type on a phone as fast as a decent typist can type. Some guy won $50k for “for composing a 149-character message, with capitalization, punctuation and various symbols, in 39 seconds.” That works out to about 46 words per minute, well short of Brutus’s 60 wpm. http://tinyurl.com/hsfubg6

I wonder if taking a typing class helped me with the W-A-S-D Gaming? :-)

still don’t know how people hit the right keys with their thumbs – then again it might be why spelling is so poor these days

I have no clue how fast I type, but if I’m chatting with someone online, I often get remarks of “you type so fast!” because I’m able to answer them so quickly…lol

I dated the Typing Teacher’s Student Aid. I did manage to pass the course, but I didn’t have to work very hard.

I took typing because I knew I would have to type my papers in college. In high school my mother who was a secretary could type them for me. When computers appeared on the scene being able to type was a great skill to have.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Remember that? I took 2 years of typing in high school. 1st year on a manual typewriter and the 2nd year on an electric one. I abhor texting! It has ruined the English language!

For me to use my thumbs to tap out a message, I’d have to use my wife’s tablet. Smartphone screens just aren’t big enough for my fat digits. That’s why I use an Android version of Graffiti, which was created originally for Palm PDAs. Shorthand for the tech age.

Knowing how to type can keep you around at layoff time. Not having to send it to the steno pool means you get it in faster.

I’ve been using pc keyboards for 30 years and still have to look at the keys when I type!
