In any human activity whatsoever, more preparation would probably help, but eventually you reach a point of diminishing returns where the tiny increment to be gained isn’t worth the effort spent in gaining it.

The other one is – I’m injured (badly enough not to be able to run). Or possibly – I forgot to enter before it filled up.
But with a race number & packet in hand, there is no other one.
