While survival of the mutant is of obvious importance, I was referring to the survival of the mutation. Initially, they are almost always recessive characteristics and need to be advantageous enough to gain a significant population base to survive competition with their more dominant competition. Kind of, except that it’s not usually survival that’s the issue but reproductive success.
