We watched “Big Jake” last night on AMC, “i thought you were dead’ Mr McCandles”, “not hardly!” My favorite is “The Cowboys” though. I am in my 60’s & still enjoy watching any western with JW in them, last evening while we watching “Big Jake” our 10 yr old grandson walked by & said “Is that Big Jake”? Another generation is coming up to enjoy “The Duke”.
While many pluggers will remember Gene Pitney’s hit song The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (which didn’t appear in the film), how many know it was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David?
My favorite JW movie is “McClintock”, closely followed by “Hatari” and “Quiet Man”. My husband, on the other hand, loves almost ALL of the John Wayne movies, even “The Conqueror”, arguably his worst.
I recall the time when the Librarian of Congress was named Marion – male. Not just Marion, but Marion the Librarian.

Hatari would have been just another safari film except for Henry Mancini’s music – then hilarious, and made Baby Elephant Walk a classic. Sheer genius, scoring it for caliope.

My son-in-law has watched every John Wayne movie so many times, he could recite them. Me, I don’t care for western.

John Wayne or John Payne, all good stuff. But I always wonder how John Payne can grin through just about every scene.
