When I was Nelson’s age back in the early sixtiesa person could go outside after dark on a clearnight and see the Milky Way. Today you can’t see itin too many places in the USA because of the bigincrease of light pollution.
I used to wonder why I was seeing lots fewer stars than I remembered seeing as a kid back in the 60’s. It took a while for me to realize that light pollution had much to do with it. But it was also due in part, I believe, to my eyesight being a little diminished. If I put on glasses, I can see more stars, even here in town. But I live in a small town (around 1600 people). I have never tried looking for stars in big cities.
I live in San Diego. Never see more than a dozen or so stars at night. A couple of years ago, the whole city had a major power failure and was blacked out. No lights at all. I stood in my driveway and looked up at all the stars, the Milky Way, just like back in rural Michigan as a child, and I cried because I knew I’d never see that again from my driveway.

I live in a big city, and I’ve been known to see stars. One time I even ran into Alice Cooper.
