Dividing their army into two to be surrounded by them would only work if you had superior numbers, superior arms, superior armor and superior tech. Otherwise you’re screwed.
Several years back it was announced that during some sort of war games, our officers were given tactical nukes and told to not use them. Then they were put in a situation in which their troops all died unless they used the TacNukes. Most of them used them.

One of the interesting things about Nixon’s Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty of 1972 was that it committed the USA to not defend the American people from ballistic missile attack.

GWB was vilified for withdrawing from that treaty DEC. 13, 2001.

Putin at the time said we should not do so.
He needed a more agreeable President to deal with.
