I think this strip is clearly referencing geomagnetic reversal (see article on Wikipedia), and this meeting is taking place in the midst of one of those reversal periods.
In our culture, the Mercator map was the first one (of considerable importance) that has North on the top (for practical reasons after the discovery that one can sail around the world and that there must be a north pole).
Before that, practically all maps in our culture had East on top. Hence the verb “to orient”.
