Look for declining federal funding for endangered species protection and recovery. Canis rufus, like most wild canids, didn’t compete well against Canis currentem capitalist.
Maybe they deserve to be saved, but I don’t believe it is the government’s responsibility. Private organizations (non-profit or otherwise (aka:zoos) ) should take this one.
IUCN suggests they were extinct in the wild in 1980, were reintroduced in NC in recent years and their biggest threat is hybridization with other wolf species, not humans.
