As a former mortgage loan originator I had to ask the “race” question when filling out an loan application. We were obligated by law to ask or require the applicants to check one of the boxes. They didn’t have to answer, but if they didn’t the banks wouldn’t loan them the money no matter how good everything else looked on the application.
That was because the banks were required by the feds to provide proof they weren’t being biased on their loan decisions based on race. That law was made back in the late 60’s or early 70’s I believe. Always felt uncomfortable asking it though, so I would explain the above so they wouldn’t be offended (at me anyway).
I work in a medical office. There are some diseases that are more prevalent in certain racial/ethnic groups (think sickle cell or Tay-Sachs). Thus the questions.
