Actually it could make sense. Most men are all gut and no butt which is why their tummy pushes their pants down and they are always pulling them up unless they really tighten the belt down. Thus suspenders (braces) would keep the belt up while the belt in a more relaxed setting would keep the pants shaped and overall in position.

You can get belt suspenders like these at suspenderstore.com. I had some several years ago and all it did was give my belt new kinks in weird places.
