Baseball is still more exciting than soccer, with is a dull, boring game where nobody scores most of the time and usually ends in 1-0 snoozefests. Soccer will never supplant baseball as the national pastime and Major League Soccer will fold in a few years now that David Beckham’s retired just like the original North American Soccer League folded a few years after Pele retired. People would still rather pay to see Bryce Harper hit the ball out of the park for a home run than see Kaka score the only goal in a 1-0 snoozefest.
Studies reported on some sports shows have said this will save a whole 14 SECONDS per game! How about throwing out the first batter who steps out to readjust his gloves after each pitch? Calling an automatic ball very time a pitcher steps off the mound between pitches? Catchers only get ONE trip to the mound per inning, and NO OTHER players may take part, or go to the mound without a manager/coach present?I remember watching a Reds game years ago. Johnny Bench had a 3-2 count. The catcher stepped out to signal an intentional 4th ball, Bench relaxed, and he jumped back in and caught a perfect 3rd strike. Left Bench standing there with his mouth open! And GET RID OF THE DH! Make pitchers bat, and make them go longer. The constant one-batter relievers, and consequent pitching changes, are the REAL game killers! Can we leave the gloves on the field also? Slowest ever MLB game was a Brooklyn Dodgers game in the 20s or 30s. 56 minutes!
As someone who grew up playing and watching baseball, I am OK with the pace of most MLB games. That said, I wouldn’t mind if they instituted a few rules to eliminate several of the more obvious time wasting activities, as long as it doesn’t change the overall “integrity” of the game. This new rule strikes me as more symbolic, since IWs happen pretty infrequently.

Kill the commercials. 30 seconds to switch sides after the 3rd out.

I don’t mind the slow pace in baseball. I can catch up on my emails, peruse the newspaper, read War and Peace and not miss any of the action….

Every deliberate ball scores a run for the other team. In football, every punt should give the other team a point.
