How many years ago was that? I used to see Gasoline Alley in the Chicago Tribune back in the 1960s but I actually didn’t start reading it until the 1970s.
This kind of thing actually happened several times during the Vietnam war. I am another old f**t who actually served there, as did several members of my HS graduating class. One of them was a very highly trained medic who actually performed emergency surgery on one of his Company. Kept the guy alive long enough for dust off and arrival at offshore Navy hospital ship

If I recall correctly, Chipper received the Bronze Star for saving that Vietnamese girl’s life.
