Imagination is the best toy. My Barbies were superheroes, scientists, androids, space explorers, you name it. Hardly any of them ever dated Ken, as Mattel supposed them to. Whatever equipment for them I didn’t have, I improvised from other stuff or just imagined they had it. I didn’t need three million special toys to make up new adventures when I pretended Barbie was She-ra.
Cats are the same way. They much prefer to play with things they find around the house like milk rings rather than the expensive toys you may buy them, same with a cat bed, they prefer to sleep in a box.

The kind of sci fi and fantasy toys I would have wanted barely existed when I was a kid, and they were expensive

I used to push my mattress into a tunnel shape; it was a howdah, an enchanted cave, or a spaceship.
