They should have started with making inhumane treatment illegal, and long before 1861. Working and living conditions for slaves could have been similarly regulated, which would have made the slave economy less profitable. It only became a matter for war because it was allowed to go so long and degenerate to such an inhumane level.
It didn’t begin that way, of course. Indentured servants didn’t become slaves for life without the right to redress of grievances against their owners until Casor vs. Johnson was reversed on appeal in 1655.
Actually, Lincoln wanted to leave the South alone. He understood that slavery was dying and if left to on its own would simply fade away. The South wanted to the western territories to guarantee that they would be slave territories/states, sort of like the Kansas Nebraska thing. Lincoln wanted the territories to make that decision on their own, via a vote. The problem was the South knew that such votes were not going to increase the number of “slave” states. The rich slave owners, the owners of large plantations didn’t see they had any choice but to secede. And thus we have the economic, not political source of the War between the States. And yes it was started by the South, not the North.
And Trump’s latest comment that brokering peace in the Middle East is probably easier than people realize is soon to be followed by: “Who knew peace talks in the Middle East would be so complicated?”

The slave states started seceding even before Lincoln became president.

And yet the UK got rid of slavery without a war. Lincoln wanted a war and got it in the head for his trouble.
