C’mon, Arlo, you’ve been married long enough to know that’s normal. It’s what you are there for.

Amen, Arlo! I say one thing and my BGFF (aka the wife), re-translates into something that is NOT what I said… and then it just goes to hell in a hand basket….

Arlo has not yet mastered the art of being a husband. When Mrs. Loop says things about herself that will be turned around on me, I say such things as, “Hmm…”, " Huh!", “How about that!”, and “Really!”I learned a long time ago to never commit.

“It felt good to be useful”? I called it free slave labor for the kids. Are Arlo & Janis retired? Maybe they need to do volunteer work if they do not “feel useful”. I personally cannot imagine having that luxury to NOT “feel useful”!

I’s a feature developed by wives over millennia. Since the advent of oral communication, actually.

Not feeling useful is the start of old age. Whether it’s work, play, church or other volunteer efforts: they’ll keep you around until they can replace you, then relegate you to the sidelines (then off the field, then out of the stadium…).

This is why men don’t talk.

On “being useful” – I think Arlo is referring to the specific situation, not as a generality. All parents want to know that they are important to their kids, no matter how grown-up the kids have become. Being useful, in this case, allowed them to realize that they are still an important part of Gene’s life.

Actually, she’s processing your simplistic, straight-forward male thoughts and adding the nuance and shadings present in the female mind to them. Arlo, there are ONLY TWO WORDS that any married male can “safely say” to their significant other! They are, “Yes, Dear!” Once you learn that, life is good – until you learn that, it’s digging yourself one hole after another. Learn that, Grasshopper, and set yourself free!

I think, given the fact that it’s a cartoon, any in depth psychological analysis is rendered rather pointless.

Since when is anything “normal” in marriage?
