I’m pretty sure Mutt sees stars, but that’s not in the conjugation of to see.
It reminds me of an old cartoon where the mom is correcting the kid: “No Johnny, you should say ‘I saw the table’ or ’I have seen the table . . . ’.” Meanwhile she has her back turned and hasn’t yet noticed the saw he’s carrying.

I’m guilty of saying “Seen” instead of “Saw”
But personally, I don’t really see a problem with it.
