Yesterday clean, tidy deathbed sheets. Today clean socks to prevent trench foot. What next, clean combs to prevent the spread of head lice?

It is not necessary to starch socks.

Great idea for new sitcom: The Sliding Nun – monastic lifestyle brings out the sprite in nun who glides about the convent’s polished floors on big, fluffy socks.

This is why the Chicago baseball team so frequently wears “throwback” uniforms. Which I guess is a baseball term in itself.

My favorite part was the parenthetical reference to “WWI” (clearly implying that SOMEONE feels some of her readers (I’m looking at you, Radish) are to stoopid to determine on their own which trench war was fought from 1914-1918).

Trenches in WWI, foxholes in WW2. Mustard gas in WWI, flamethrowers in WWII. IEDs, suicide vests and drones today.Technology lurches ever forward.

One way of fighting trench-foot was to (after cleaning and thoroughly drying your feet) cover your feet completely with petroleum-jelly or ladies face cream, then putting on a thin sock.

Over that you put on a pair of thick (dry!) wool socks. You don’t take your boots off at all unless you have a dry pair of wool socks to put back on over your thin socks.

If you have an opportunity to wash and dry tour feet and reapply the Vaseline/face cream and put on new dry socks, do so.

Cleanliness of your feet takes precedence over all other grooming.

Isn’t it a little late to advertise for donations to support our troops in a war that ended almost 100 years ago? Trench foot is the least of the worries of today’s soldier; rather than worrying about stepping in mud, today’s soldier is more worried about stepping on an IED (improvised explosive device, for those who aren’t keeping up on their acronyms). Remote robo-detectors might be appreciated, though….

Can it be said, withal, that random socks do make a pretty artistic pattern? Or is it not so random? Can someone calculate the algorithm governing the sock dispersal pattern (the GoComics overlords would no doubt consider it infra dig for their redoubtable computers)?
