Aren’t squirrels herbivores? (Fruits & Nuts). Going through trash is something that their distant cousins (rats) would do.

I can see raccoons, but not squirrels, getting into a metal trash can.

Squirrels will go ANYWHERE. . .the two or three in our tree dig small holes all over the pine grass. Not sure what they’re doing, but at times our yard looks like the pock-marked surface of the moon. . .

I’ve never had a squirrel dig in my trash, but then again I don’t throw away large quantities of nuts.

We have dumpsters and squirrels are always in and out of them. I’m sure most of us throw away more than nuts. But this is bear country, so I’m more concerned about THOSE visitors to the trash…

If it’s sweet, and they can get to it, they’ll go after it.
