Halloween as you call it is a contraction from “All Hallow’s Eve” (the night before All Saints Day) It has continued to be shortened up, but when I was a child (in the USA) we spelled it Hallow’een. The apostrophe must have been too difficult for the admen & Hallmark to deal with…..

The English language is indeed fading away.

We were admonished when pronouncing the word ‘Education’ with a ‘g’ or ‘j’ sound. Sadly it is now sounded that way in the dictionaries.

John, you better help Elly to clean up the mess in the living room before you guys go to bed.

Pish on cleaning up tonight. Just make sure the candle in the pumpkin is really out, and go to bed. The mess will be there in the morning.

Apparently it was fun for the kids.

I remember seeing the apostrophe when I was young, but not in every case. I think it was fading out by then. I’m 64. I still use it occasionally when I think to.

Looks like Elly was the one who got sick on all the sugar - figuratively and literally. LOL
