Seems such an expression would’ve been around a lot sooner even worded differently. Many shows “jumped the shark” before this. Any long running show eventually becomes boring because at some point a character leaves or a new character is added or something happens that changes the show so it’s not as good as it was in the first years. I can think of many shows that “jumped the shark” at some point and that leads to their ultimate cancellation.

The term of art prior to “Jumping the Shark” was “Cousin Olivering.”
