Canon is that Alice is four years old and in pre-school. Petey is eight and in third grade.
And yes, Peter is correct; the safety-gate was for toddler Alice, who might have toddled out or fallen down stairs in a bad way when she was little. But she’s big now. Petey is the one we need to worry over, since he’s just old enough to have serious concerns about zombies (not that the safety-gate would have kept them out)….

Seen any zombies in the house? The gate has been an effective zombie defense and now it is coming down? What will happen now?

Love Petie’s expression of apprehension and fear. He is the one who is Really concerned about zombies.

He could smear jello all over the floor.(Yeah, I know, but it’s still a funny bit.)

Maybe the fence was designed to keep Petey from getting out.

Alice is four? I thought she was closer to six.

Alice is a rather short for six. Four makes some sense here.
