    Canon is that Alice is four years old and in pre-school. Petey is eight and in third grade.

    And yes, Peter is correct; the safety-gate was for toddler Alice, who might have toddled out or fallen down stairs in a bad way when she was little. But she’s big now. Petey is the one we need to worry over, since he’s just old enough to have serious concerns about zombies (not that the safety-gate would have kept them out)….
