I grew up in central US. Thongs and flip-flops were footware. Thongs could be fancier. If a woman’s sandal had a platform with a post that went between the big and next toe, and two straps back from that to hold it on the foot, it was called a thong. I remember seeing them labeled as such in the stores. Sandals had straps across the toe area, thongs had the post.
