What did you have in mind, Elizabeth? The toy shop, the electronics shop, something from the menu at a restaurant for lunch, or perhaps children’s sleeping pills? (What’s CA$587.76 then compared to now?)
I am looking at Elly’s list of things and they are interesting. In Arizona, we only wear ski pants when we go skiing. Is this something that Canadians wear all the time in the winter? Also, do the track suits take the place of things like shirts and pants?
Why is it that so many commenters assume that the Pattersons are rich? Sure, John is a dentist, but his practice is far from being established and raking in the cash. Besides, he has office overhead, payroll, etc. to pay out of his patients’ fees.
Spoiler alert!
Later on when his practice is established, John and Elly start taking overseas vacations and behave like people with money, but not in these early strips.

That could be the present day amount, as Lynn sometimes updates her old strips in their reruns.

Kids never think of school clothes and tools as ‘something for them’. Elizabeth probably wants a toy…

I hate how they act poor when John is a dentist.
