There was one advantage to living on top of one another (literally) in a Brownstone apartment in Brooklyn in the 1950’s: you knew your neighbors. Just stop at each landing and sniff and you know what they were having for dinner.
I now live in a cul-de-sac that’s 1/2 mile long with 30 houses stretched out. I wave at my neighbors as I am out walking and they pass me in their cars (so few of my neighbors walk themselves), but I really don’t know who they are.
The best thing that happened in the past couple of months was a power outage. A lot of people used the time to walk their dogs. We met and talked the the people we saw, but did not know. We need to arrange for more power outages.
