It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.
Very effective demonstration on the inherently poor design of our education system. Focusing in class (particularly in high school) can be really hard. Making teenagers full of energy (and hormones) sit still for hours and try to absorb information passively is probably one of the dumbest ideas adults ever came up with. It seems better designed to suppress the natural desire for learning that children have as opposed to promoting it. This is why so many people say things like “I am so glad I am done with school for the rest of my life” when they graduate.
I always learned a lot more from real teachers who used active learning techniques, like doing projects and labs during class. Teachers who just drone on for an hour each class period are pretty useless for effectively teaching young people. I even learned more when I just read on my own as compared to listening to lectures by people trying to get tenure so they can coast to retirement.

I was always terrified of being call on and not knowing the answer, so I always paid close attention in class.

This mirrors the current Non Sequitur arc: “What can I do to prepare for a pop quiz?” “Umm…pay attention in class?” “Oh, get real!”

Now show him this outside of himself and he would pick up on it. He is in the forest and see the forest for the trees.

Better stop the you-know-what – it can cause hair and memory loss, as well as other terrible things.
