“Disinform?” No. “To Rat” means to squeal on, grass, give up, drop a quarter on (archaic), tell on, snitch, etc. Just imagine a Trmpf White House meeting, or press conference.
It’s a chicken/egg situation. The majority of news organizations are providing infotainment, not true journalism, because that’s what viewers/readers want, and that’s what advertisers will pay for. Sound bites, scandal, rumor, innuendo, deliberate disinformation, are all grist for the 24-hour “news” cycle.
The news media still does have some pull. Take the (very) recent WashPo / 60 Mins. expose of pharmaceutical lobbying to stop the DEA from cracking down on opioid distributors. Trump said yesterday that he saw the report on 60 Mins. Sunday night, and is taking the opioid epidemic very seriously. But even more importantly, his pick for drug czar, who as a Congressman was the “author” of the bill that essentially put a halt to DEA enforcement, withdrew himself from consideration earlier today. I’d chalk that story up as a nice win for the mainstream media.
Trump’s ‘fake news’ strategy is no different than if FDR had tried to persuade the American people to get their war news from Axis Sally and Tokyo Rose

Oh, there’s a great way to make people care about what you write. It’s simple:
LIE.

It doesn’t help when your pouty POTUS claims real news as fake and fake news as real. And then there are the ones who believe him.

I didn’t think journalists informed anymore. Thought all they did was editorialize. Facts are dead.

Romance novels aren’t books, per se.

If you really want an audience for your writing, start a daily comic strip.

I didn’t know journalists still existed; I thought Fox News had them all rounded up and shot.

I don’t understand why journalists get so much hate. There are frauds, liars etc in EVERY JOB.
The sooner people accept this the better.

It’s so much easier to spout off about fake news and to denigrate journalists rather than to engage in critical thinking.
