As I understand it, duck and cover was to protect you from flying debris driven by the shock wave. If you were out of the blast zone and survived the damage from the shock wave, you had a chance of survival.
hey red I hope you saved that space vecile for your bomb shelter so when ya hear it planned you can fly to space again but this time make sure you take the whole family…

I just remembered this. We used to go visit my cousin back then who lived about 30 miles from here. We used to pass this white and red building with a big red radar turning on top of it. As kids we joked it was “tracking Russian bombers”. I found out a few years ago it was not a joke! That was really what that place was. It’s still there but now it has a big silo type dome instead of the turning radar.
I was in grade school in the early ’60’s. I remember the drills and the Civil Defense signs. I also remember the Nuns lining us all up and taking us out to wait for our parents or school busses to come and take us home during the Cuban Missle Crisis in 1962! TALK ABOUT A SCARED BUNCH OF KIDS!!

Remember this and the ‘fallout shelters’ in church basements, in dept. store basement floors etc.
