My wife, a Girl Scout leader, told me the Girl Scouts promote leadership whereas the Boy Scouts stress being followers.
Boy Scouts has always been a lot more family friendly, allowing sisters to go along on trip. Girl Scouts tend to be pretty sexist, from what I can remember.
