Hmmm… In the dailies, Waffles is gray:

I guess that’s due to an unfortunate lack of coordination with the colorist.
Waffles got a dye job!
Apparently the body language of beings on Waffles’s planet is different from that of dogs on our planet. Dogs in the play stance (see panel 2) are saying, “Hey, wanna play? Hunh? Yes? C’mon, let’s play!”
C’mon guys, Waffles is adorable. Accept him however he’s drawn and colored.
When it comes to being a hero, sometimes…ya just gotta go with what ya got.
