    Nice try. That’s his surname (or the nearest he had to one, anyway). His family and close intimates would likely have called him Gaius.

    He was Gaius Julius Caesar. In modern terms, that’s something like “Gaius, of the Caesarian branch of the Julian clan”.

    Augustus wasn’t one of the Caesars; he added the name to his own to give himself a bit more respectability when he had himself made emperor of the erstwhile republic, and it kind of stuck as a title to his successors.
