Just in case anyone cares for an answer, it seemed to be “yes” about the time this strip first saw print. I grew up in upstate NY where we sometimes had as much as two weeks of summer. The Lions Club, which ran gumball machines as a fundraiser, picked up any machines they had outside of downtown stores as soon as the sun made it’s intentions known. They brought them back a few weeks later. Ingredients have likely changed in the decades since, of course.
