Truck reads: GASOLINE
Sluggo: Why do gas trucks always have a chain dangling the back?
Nancy: That's to prevent an explosion.
Sluggo: Gotta go to th' store---See ya later.
Nancy: What's that?
Sluggo: A can of fluid for my uncle's lighter.

This might be another one to separate the legit oldies from any youngsters who may have wandered in.
I don’t think I’ve seem grounding chains on a truck for a few decades.

I grew up on the tail end of this practice, but I do remember seeing old trucks in use (old being late 40s and early 50s) with a drag chain; but as mentioned above, they were likely continuing to do so out of habit, or out of concern that maybe those new tires DON’T bleed off static like they should…

Wonderful! And, so many memories!
The chains on trucks! I remember the noise they made the most. Such a distinctive sound.
Lighter fluid! For Zippo lighters and the like! It is probably at least 10 years since I have used one of the several Zippo lighters I have. I am not sure why I quit using them back then (and then used Bic Lighters mostly for my pipe)…. probably just ran out of fluid or more likely the flints…. and never got around to getting more. Some of them, though… very nice…. and as you would anticipate, I had several of the “pipe” varieties even though the regular Zippos worked just as well with my pipes.

This is also why ghosts drag chains and moan. The chains prevent ectoplasmic discharge, and they moan because they’re sick and tired of the sound the chain makes.

Very smart of Nancy to know about the chains? Where did Sluggo get the money for lighter fluid and a chain? When I lived in Moldova, every car had a rubber strap dragging the ground to control static discharge. I see a few cars here in the US with them.

Over reaction. The chain keeps static electricity from building up and transferring to the gas which is flammable. This way the electricity goes into the road.

Over reaction a form of HUMOR.
