Nancy: So that's the new place for our phone, eh?
Aunt Fritzi: Yes---The carpenter built it right into the wall.
Nancy: O.K., I guess.
Aunt Fritzi: How do you like it?
Nancy: But it's not very comfortable.
Once upon a time when phones were new in most homes, and were pretty much uniformly ugly, and reception was through the wire, and you’d just as soon not have it cluttering up a nice piece of furniture, and you couldn’t move it from place to place… a designated location, preferably out of the way of visitors and, even better, out of sight, made sense.
Ours was on a shelf in a curtained alcove, with a chair, in a hallway. Kind of cozy, actually.
1- Hello? What’s this? 2- FRITZ: It’s a nook. 3- NANCY: One of those internet electronic book readers? Sweet! How’s it work? FRITZ: No! Does it look like a book reader? It’s an alcove. A little recess for the phone. 4- NANCY: Recess!?!? Where’s the jungle gym, the swings? FRITZ: Ai yi yi. Who didn’t see that coming…
We had a nice hallway bench at the end of the hall. The old black phone sat on it, the chair part was comfy, and it had a shelf for phone books (remember those?). It was great til I was a teen.. LOL!

I had an old house with a phone nook. The Pink Princess Phone never looked quite right in it.

My grandmother’s old home had a telephone nook. Large enough for the telephone and a phone book and a pad of paper and a few writing instruments.

But large enough for you.

Why not pull up a chair, Nancy?
