That’s a very good question. The rule is generally that if two words used together make a third meaning then they are hyphenated. It is the English grammar experts at universities [Oxford in the UK] that make the final decision about one word or two in common usage.

Because backyard is an adjective. For example, you have a backyard barbecue in your back yard.
