I will often comment to strangers on what a cute puppy they have, using the term generically. Some of them get quite offended: “He’s not a puppy!” On that note, does anal-retentive have a hyphen?

Yes. My 14 year old dog is my baby, and she always will be.

Even when you are with them on the last moment, they are your fur babies.

Not for me. I love my animals greatly. ( I chose not to have babies, babies turn into teenagers. :P ) But they are not babies.

I try not to call my companion “baby” and he’ll thump his feet at me when I do. He was 1-yr. when I met him at the shelter and he adopted me, so he must have had some developed cognitive ability.
