I will often comment to strangers on what a cute puppy they have, using the term generically. Some of them get quite offended: “He’s not a puppy!” On that note, does anal-retentive have a hyphen?
I try not to call my companion “baby” and he’ll thump his feet at me when I do. He was 1-yr. when I met him at the shelter and he adopted me, so he must have had some developed cognitive ability.

Yes. My 14 year old dog is my baby, and she always will be.
