Please, can you help a German Calvin-and-Hobbes-Fan? I know, what a cantaloupe is, I know Lassie, I know melon and collie, but is there any special about melon-collie?
Cantaloupe is a type of melon.
Lassie is a Collie (dog breed)
Crossed they are melon - collie (melancholy)
Melancholy Baby is a famous song originally published in 1912.
Melancholy is a deep long-lived sadness.
Sort of like the joke (pun) in todayâs strip âŠ
Well, Calvinâs lame joke did have one redeeming quality: It was about animals and food â the two most important things in life, in the opinion of us tigers.
Speaking of lame jokes about animals and food, what do you get if you cross a cornfield with a chipmunk?
Hobbes, my guess is âcorn chips.â Donât tell me youâre going down that same path as Calvin. I thought you had better tastes than that. I guess as long as that taste doesnât include humans youâre all right.
Tineli and LX013 -
I understand your dilemma. I know enough German to get myself into trouble. But when I hear jokes in German, I rarely get them. Humor doesnât translate well from one language to another, especially when it involves puns. One has to be be well versed not only in the language, but the culture and history of the country to really understand these things.
Yukoner,
Yes, itâs right up my alley; it âbowls me overâ.
Apparently, Hobbes and rogue53 are of the same stripe where puns are concerned. They go âhither and yonâ, but I wonât get melancholy about it.
Mike Firesmith,
Your pun âkillsâ me, and also reminds me of something Mae West said, âWhen I am good, I am very, very good, but when Iâm bad, Iâm better.â
I donât know. Would another kid in Calvinâs age group know the word melancholy or that âMelancholy Baby is a famous song originally published in 1912â? :-)
Hobbes doesnât get Calvinâs jokes because Hobbes is a manifestation of Calvinâs unconscious. And that works both waysâŠ
ENFPs (Calvin) and INFJs (Hobbes) have fundamentally different senses of humor. They have common ground, but theyâre of different polarities (as it were). âHobbes gets it, he just doesnât want itâ is the perfect description of the dynamic. And Calvin reacts the same way to âtiger aphorismsâ (see a strip during these past few weeks).
Thanks for explaining the pun! Read it loud and you get it!
I like Terry Pratchett, and there is a very giftet translator, who translates these books into German. And he really gets the puns in the book, I admire people, who can do that.

HmmmâŠâŠ Not too bad as a first guess; but a bit obvious as a punchline, and somewhat lacking in deeper philosophical meaningâŠâŠ
