Good morning MerryMarg (actually it is still evening of Christmas Day here on the west coast of N. America but mid afternoon of Day after Christmas in the Philippines).

Speaking of boxing day, it has a totally different meaning in the Philippines – It is any day that Manny P. has a bout.

Ah, poor Calvin, the entrepreneur tried but had no takers. He got taken to the principal instead.

For almost 20 years I sat in that principal’s chair. I have seen and hear from a number of Calvin’s You needed to have and keep a sense of humour. (These kids were easier to take than some of the teachers who sent them.)

Boxing Day here in the Bahamas too. Since it falls on a Sunday this year we also have tomorrow off. Junkanoo parade downtown early tomorrow morning (handmade costumes of mostly crepe paper, loud music of goatskin drums, cowbells, horns, groups of 100s of supporters). Dress warmly, it’s chilly & damp @ 4am.

Calvin has very impressive language skills for a 2nd (?) grader.

The assocation with Calvin is public domain - no charge. The proof would be the class picture.

Good Morning Marg. To be technical not all provinces in Canada recognize Boxing Day as a Statutory Holiday, but we do have all the after Christmas Sales - sometimes for weeks at time !

Boxing is such a violent sport….I can’t believe that many people celebrate it.

To be good for such a long time for Santa is hard to stick to people, now they must let off steam on Boxingday !

Happy Boxing Day, Calvin if you just could put you knowledge of dinosaurs to other things and not getting back at Susie, you would rule the world.

Ok, I just looked up Boxing Day on Wikipedia. It seems that it has a long history dating back to early 18th century! Nothing really definitive except that it sounds as though it was mainly for helping the poor! Mostly celebrated in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zeland, and Canada. It seems that those areas of the US that border Canada also celebrate the holiday.

What if Calvin really does become successful, though? (Although obviously not through this “discovery.”) You don’t know! After all, what kid his age even knows what lucre is? Wouldn’t you love to have had an ironclad agreement to be Steve Jobs’s or Warren Buffett’s pal since childhood? That could be the best $20 you ever spent.

After an episode like this, the next time that Calvin gets a toy taken by someone, I’m going to root for the bad guy, at least a little bit!

I was thinking of looking up Boxing Day to what does one do for this day today? Calvin you are becoming what does one say pay me type for protection, only pay me for being a friend. How do you come up with these ideas and for a little boy your vocabulary is hugh. I don’t I would come up with any of that talk at your age. I way beyond that age and I can’t now at my age come up with that vocabulary.

Only children who spend a lot of time in adult company often have precocious vocabulary skills.

I remember on Boxing Day my grandparents used to give “Christmas boxes” (small gifts of money) to the tradesmen who came round to the house - milkman, baker’s boy, paper boy, jobbing gardener, coal merchant, window cleaner &c. Nowadays nobody comes!

Boxing day 1969 on R&R in Australia. A generous Aussie and his wife and Greyhound took me to Bathurst for the day and festival that was like a country fair. They let me “catch” the hound at the end of her race and I had a Pastie. The memory helped make the next several months more tolerable.

Good on ya, Aussies! And, yes, I do know it is off topic but after the boxing day message I couldn’t resist.

Now for my comment about that nice young fellow. The perfect story line for pre-Christmas, ‘11 will be Hobbes reminding Calvin of this day when he is analyzing his “goodness” quotient for the year in his Santa appeal.

If Calvin can include a tie-in to Global Warming / Climate Change / Global Climate Disruption, he should have no problem getting that grant.

This scenario is humorous, but as a teacher, I find it all too true. Bullying is a major problem at schools in the US. If all the bullied children did as Calvin, there would be no problem. But, unfortunately, all too many take out their frustrations with violence, as seen in the several school shootings.

When Calvin is old enough to run for office, I would be more than happy to vote for him as he has been a lawyer/politician since he was six. I mean, talk about experience counts….
