In human genetics, the Mitochondrial Eve (also mt-Eve, mt-MRCA) is the matrilineal most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of all living humans, i.e., the most recent woman from whom all living humans descend in an unbroken line purely through their mothers and through the mothers of those mothers, back until all lines converge on one woman.
One common misconception surrounding mitochondrial Eve is that since all women alive today descended in a direct unbroken female line from her, she must have been the only woman alive at the time. However, nuclear DNA studies indicate that the size of the ancient human population never dropped below tens of thousands. Other women living during Eve’s time may have descendants alive today but not in a direct female line.
In case this Pot Shot is meant to call our attention to Biblical history, it is worth noting that none of the descendants of Adam and Eve, including Noah, were Jewish until the generation of Abraham. That leaves lots of room for gentile purity.
There’s a longstanding family legend that we have Jewish in our background. My brother took one of the genetic tests and reported no discernible trace of Jewish ancestry, mostly Europeans (especially British) of various kinds and various brands of American Indians. I countered that according to British Israelites, Brits are Israel, and according to Mormons, Indians are Jews. Therefore we are almost pure Jewish. He blustered the way an older brother does when refuted by his younger brother, but to no avail. Nyah!
This Pot Shot seems to have generated quite a bit of speculation as to its mysterious hidden meaning. I wonder if our Brilliant mentor, Ashleigh, can enlighten us about that?
